I guess many people have IT related jobs here, and for others its a hobby (or for geeks like me, both ;)).

What's it for you :user:

Started as "I need a PC for my job", found out very quickly if I needed to add, or fix anything, then I better do it myself. Also found I was good at it ... started fixing other peoples PCs as a hobby. People were giving me money to fix their PC so turned the hobby into a job.

You could make a living out of it then, now ... it's a hobby. :D

Hobby now. nearly both. Went the same road you did mucks, only with me it was information research. Then when I buggered my back the business sorta collapsed when I was in the process of setting it up :(. Still do research for family & friends thpough. Love doing it, although no longer a member of all the paid databases I needed to be in business I still have the skills.
Had a family member call me a dole bludger (behind my back) a few weeks ago because I get a disability allowance. Bsstard's had me do research for him twice, on specialist subjects, totalling over 36 hours at $85/hour. I was more than tempted to send him a bill! But, since he didn't say it to my face... *shrugs*, but I guess he won't be getting any more free research outta me

Owning a PC is essential for my work but I guess they're just a hobby.

I really don't think I'd want anything to do with computers to earn a living in the domestic sector although I'd consider working in a Corporate/Goverment enviroment.

I never do work for private individuals, all they ever do is whinge about the price and phone you up for a year and a day afterwards expecting a free consultancy, er, help :D

Some of the work I've done has tied in with computers, audio and film studios for instance, but I've only ever had to build and supply two complete computers.

Yeah i'm with ya on that one.

But thats why I always include all receipts and boxs so they can return them on their terms not mine. All agreed before the system is built

Unless they are family or close friends I dont give them my personal mobile number. What if something goes wrong you say? Well they want a professional they can go pay for one and get charged an extra £100 - £200 for the system!

Kids and Computers

Ive been working in a school in plymouth as an ICT Support Technician for 3 years.
Its not that bad IT wise as we are one of the leading secondary schools in the country for ICT, and my boss is quite good when it comes to new gagets and stuff. (Plus i got a free laptop, free pocket pc and i can borrow digital projectors and media centre laptops whenever i want!!)

But schools are full of kids, and kids love to break computers and keep me busy!! I cant count the number of crisp packets ive pulled out of Floppy drives!
hahaha!!

I work for the insurance industry in the I.T sector....So i have seen every possible fraudulent claim you could think of and then some....

I like my job it pays well and allows me to do things i wouldn't normally be able to do if i wasn't into computers, it started as a hobby many moons ago and after mucho studying and passing of exams.. I got a position in the I.T industry and have never really looked back..:user: ...As for the hobby bit well it stopped being a hobby when it became a profession....As i need to eat, more than i need to mess about with my friends pc's for nothing...The rest of my time is spent with my daughter....and few friends i have left (because they all seemed to disappear when i stopped fixing there computers for nothing).

So i voted Job....;)

Started off as a hobby and then managed to get a job working in the IT department of a publishing company in Newton Abbot, Devon.

Quite good as I get to play with new kit when its purchased and also get to use Apple Macs as nobody else in the department dare touch them.

Wish it payed a bit better but it's quite a cushty little number :)

Cheers,

Rich
