Archive.pst is very much larger than Archive in Outlook folder-lis

The archive.pst file is about 288 MB while the archive in Outlook folder-list
is about 72 MB. I have checked that the path for the archive-filder in
Outlook under properties and Advanced is the same as the pst file's location.

What is the likely explanation for this?
 
White space as a pst-file is a database. To force the removal of white space
right click the root of the Archive folder-> Properties-> Advanced-> Compact
