Applying 2007 template to an existing ppt. presentation

I have a .potx file that I'd like to apply to an existing .ppt file. How do I
do this? I've tried "Office Butrton/New/recently used Templates/create/ ...
however I still can't figure out how to apply the template to my existing
ppt.
What am I missing?

Go to the Design Tab, click the button to expand the Themes Gallery, choose
Browse for Themes, and then find your template (POTX). Even though it says
"browse for themes," the results include template files. Select the template
and click Apply.

It's really dumb that there's no easy way to apply an existing template from
Office | New , isn't it?
