Applications can't see Internet Connection

I don't have any trouble browsing the web with IE 6 on a dial-up connection,
but when I try to connect to a server (not a web page) through an application
I'm told that I'm not connected to the Internet. I'm not using a proxy
server or a firewall.

Why can't the applications "see" the active Internet connection?

Have you connected with your dialup and are on line when the
applications say you aren't? Since you didn't mention the name of the
applications, no one can address that directly. Look in the
applications' preferences and see if you need to enter your connection
details somewhere.

Thanks for the reply. I finally tracked the problem down to the
ZoneAlarm firewall, which I hadn't been using for the last couple of
months!

Glad you got it figured out. Thanks for letting us know.

I discovered something I didn't know: I can reach remote hosts from one
dial-up number, but not from another (both #'s connect to the same
ISP).
