Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)

I'm running Win2k SP4, it's a fairly fresh install. Windows Defender
installed fine, but when I try to run the GUI I get the error

MSASCui.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to
terminate the application.

I'm on the admin account, I've updated Win2k with everything, the only
programs installed are McAfee Virus Scan/Security Center, FireFox, WinRar,
Creative Sound Blaster and PCI drivers, and the Combined Community Codec
Pack. The CCCP was installed after the error began, and I've tried trning off
McAfee. Any idea what's going on or how to fix this?
