application error

Why is my system out of the blue decided to give me the
following message, even though I have not changed
anythingin my system. This occurs when I try to load a new
program that supposedly requires windows 2000 according
to the requirments setout by the manufacturer. Also when I
try to re install an old program that was in the system.

"16 Bit Window System"
"C:\WINNT\System32|Autoexec.NT.
The System File is not suitable for running MS DOS and
Microsoft Windows applications. Choose Close to terminate
the application"

"Close"......."Ignore"

Whether I choose Ignore or Close it just terminates the
entire operation. This happens on a number of program
installations.
