Apple Laserwriter Ethernet printing

J

John Smith

I am having trouble setting up my Apple Laserwriter 12/640 PS printer
talking to a W2K server.

The printer has an Ethernet interface which works fine. I know this because
the printer picks up an IP address from DHCP. I can telnet to the printer
from the server, using the allocated IP address. I am presented with some
printer configuration software from which I can print a test page. That all
works fine.

The problems only occur when I try to setup a print queue in W2K. Using the
"Add printer" wizard, I select local printer, create a new port, Standard
TCP/IP port. For printer name or IP address, I use the IP address of the
printer. At this point, the wizard waits for a long time. it then comes back
with a message indicating "the device type could not be identified". I have
checked that I can still ping the IP address of the printer - OK.

At this point, I have tried selecting "Generic Network Card", or "Apple
Network Printer". It makes no difference. Anything sent to the printer gets
rejected by the print queue. Nothing prints.

The protocol is set to RAW, as it is on the printer configuration sheet
which I get to print out through teleet. The only thing I can think of is
that the port number is incorrect. I just leave it at the default of 9100. I
can't find any documentation on the Apple web site about what port number it
should be.
Anyone have any ideas?
Are there standard Apple printer port numbers I could try?
Am I doing something else wrong?

Appreciate any assistance.

Regards,
John.

This Apple printer does not support Rawmode TCI/IP printing (to port 9100).
The LPD service needs to be enabled on the printer.

Then create a Standard TCP/IP port to the device in LPR mode. I don't
remember if you need to enable the byte counting.
