Appearance and themes

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 (2.66 GHz) and 512 MB of ram with a E172FP flat panel monitor. I am running the home version of XP. I went on the other day and tried to establish a screen saver. When I right click the mouse on the desktop the box opens up, but when I select properties, nothing happens.

I tried going into the control panel, into the appearances and themes area. Again, any item I click on does nothing. I cannot change/load a screen saver, change the background, fonts, etc.

I tried looking for a driver for the monitor, but I could not find any. I released the monitor and shut down the system. It reloaded when I booted back up, but I still have the same problem. The only way we can change backgrounds is via IE when a picture is being displayed (right click and set as background).

Any ideas or assistance in figuring this out would be great.

I am running Service Pack 2 with the Home XP. My

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
