APM / System not powering down.

I have that old bug again.

After a complete reinstall from a freshly formatted HDD,
my pc drops to the 'safe to turn off' msg but wont
completeley shutdown.

My Motherboard is AP?ACPI compliant and is enabled in
bios. (Awardbios 6, latets update installed).

XP itself is totally up to date.

Curiosly, there is no APM tab in the poer options section
of t he control panel. I cant figure out how to enable the
APM tab to enable advanced power options etc.

Can someone walk me through this please ?

If your BIOS is ACPI compliant, then the XP install
should be using an ACPI HAL, unless you opted for
a "Standard PC" HAL at install time.

The APM driver is not installed, that's why the TAB
in Power Management is missing. You have to manually
install the driver (System components), Reboot and
then the APM options should be available. You should
also double-check BIOS to see if APM is enabled.
I would also see if ACPI compatibility is disabled.

By the way, the driver is actually called Advanced
Power Management - Best I remember it is in the
System category of drivers. When installing don't use
auto-detect, you will have to pick the driver manually.

I would be interested to know how the system install
ended up using the "Standard HAL" if the BIOS is ACPI
compliant.

I made no choices at install time, i let it do its own
thing basically. I cant even see where the standard pc HAL
is installed.

Can you walk me through installing the apm driver. After a
brief (10 minute) look I cant see how its done.

In that case ACPI is probably installed - if so there is no APM panel;
that only appears if the ACPI setup was rejected. Check in Control
Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager in the System Devices. If
there is 'Microsoft ACPI compatible system' ACPI is installed. In that
case failure to shut down is something hanging: Look at the extensive
troubleshooter at James Eshelman's page:
specific XP section at
