APC UPS gets USB Device not recognized error message

I recently purchased an APC UPS (BX800) which uses a USB connection to the PC.
XP Pro (SP2) does not recognize this device. I've tried numerous things
suggested by (APC Support, ABIT support (I have a ABIT KV8-Max3 MB, using VIA
USB drivers), to get XP to recognize this device.

Suggestions from APC & ABit did nothing to solve my issue.

My BIOS does not have have an Advanced Power management or USB Legacy Device
entry which I was asked to change by APC.

Since XP will not recognize the UPS, I can't load the PowerChute software
which requires that it see the UPS on a USB port when loading its software.

At a loss, any help would be appreciated.

Confused here. Subject says UPS/USB.

A UPS is an unteruptable power supply. A UPS is NOT a USB device. Please
explain.

The UPS connects to the PC using a USB connector. This connection allows you
to monitor the UPS' s status etc.. with software loaded on the PC.

I get the error message when I plug the cable from the UPS into the USB port
on the PC. XP recognizes that something was plugged into the USB port but a
few seconds later you get the error message.

I have a printer, scanner & memory stick that have USB interfaces & they all
work fine.

Some UPS support a connection to the computer through USB which allows
for a controlled shut down of the system in the event of a power failure.

If you don't leave this PC on while unattended for long periods of time,
don't mess with this. The software monitoring the UPS is just something
else eating up memory. Most UPS make an irritating audible tone when you
lose input AC power. You can test if available by simply unplugging the UPS
from the wall outlet while the UPS is on. Audibly notifiying the user to
immediately shut the PC down if power loss continues.
If the PC shuts down properly using the Powerchute software while in standby
or hibernation mode may be problematic as well.

If this is true. I would take it back and exchange the unit for one
that
works. All one has to do is plug in the USB connector and XP
will recognize the USP unit. No Rube Goldberg steps to follow.
