USB-UPS issue

when I boot my system I get one of two messages concerning an APC UPS

NO UPS DEVICE FOUND
or
UPS DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED

both with a message to check my cable.

when the system is FULLY up I can unplug and replug my UPS and I get
the disconnect and reconnect tone and then I can talk to the UPS and
everything is fine. So it isn't a hardware problem.

This UPS worked fine before I reinstalled XP, and maybe for a short
time after that.

I have the latest APC Ver2 drivers.
XP PRO SP2 and all updates.

I have 4 USB ports with a 4 port expander on one port, two printers,
USB mouse, & UPS. The issue is there regardless of what other devices
I have plugged in or what port I plug the UPS into.

I am thinking that the APC driver is loading before the USB drivers
and not finding anything or loading while the USB drivers are loading
therefore finding a UPS but not able to talk to it.

can anyone shed some light?

can I control when the APC UPS drivers load?

You might be better off contacting the maker of the ups for any issues. Have
you changed anything like the motherboard? What have you changed in the
system. You said you reinstalled windows, why?

I've gone around with APC, they have no idea.
They did send me a new cable.

XP periodically gets "strange" - I reinstall.

The error messages are coming from your APC Status software. They have
various software. I am currently using PowerChute Personnel Edition V 1.5
{not checked recently for any updates}. If you look in All
Programs\Startup, you should find APC Status loading as part of your startup
programs. I would expect that all USB drivers are loader prior to running
any of the programs in the All Programs\Startup group.

Was the new cable you replaced the USB cable from your APC? Some USB units
will not work correctly via a hub. Not sure if this the case with APC.
Have you run the APC software {should be in All Programs\APC} and checked
for any problem indications.
If I was going to uninstall/re-install anything, it would be the APC
software not Windows XP.

The APC software is for monitoring, checking APC unit status, controlled
shutdown etc. The APC software has no bearing on the actual function of the
APC unit.

Thanks for your reply.

It started when I had 1.5 installed. I found 2.0 and tried that.
called APC and explained the gorry details and they decided it was the
cable (I didn't think so....but). I can connect it to my laptop with
no issues so I don't think it is the UPS or the APC software.
last night my desktop did some weird things associated with the USB
ports. This AM after a hibernate (not a shutdown) all night,
everything is OK. In trouble shooting, I have connected to all 4
ports, with and without other things connected. Tried it in safe mode.
You name it, I tried it.
It is looking more like a hardware issue with the USB ports.
I guess it is time to buy a USB 2 board. I had the USB on a Dell
laptop totally kill that system.
