AIM worked perfectly until a few days ago when the buddy list screen froze
and I couldn't close it. I couldn't restart or shut down the computer. Had
to turn it off with power switch. Uninstalled AIM and downloaded new version
with Norton Internet Security disabled. Download completed, but, when I
enable NIS, I couldn't get it to work. Does anyone have any idea why the old
version malfunctioned and do you know of any way I can get it to work now?
I've used AIM for years with no problems until recently. I've scanned for
viruses and system is clean.

Not sure; you might look at AOHell's support pages...or see your NIS
documentation on how to re-enable access. It isn't a Windows issue, for
sure.

Also, firewall issues aside, try Trillian or GAIM to see if you might even
like them better - they're multi-IM-client applications. I currently prefer
GAIM and use it for AIM, YIM, and MSN messenger.

What exactly do you mean by 'doesn't work'? New downloaded version won't
install? Nothing appears onscreen when you double-click AIM shortcut?
Something else?
If installed ok, but nothing appears when you try to run AIM, possibly the
registry setting for where it is to appear onscreen is messed up and trying
to locate it offscreen. In that case if it were me I would try
uninstalling, deleting it's registry settings at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\AOL Instant Messenger (TM)
and then reinstalling.
Actually, the first thing I would have tried would have been a System
Restore to just before the problem occurred, if there was a recent restore
point. That fixed a 'nothing appears' problem for me once. I don't know if
that would work correctly if you've already changed versions.
If you are using AOL as well as AIM, call AOL, as you wouldn't want to mess
up AOL in the process of trying to fix AIM.
Please note that I am not suggesting you fiddle with the registry if you're
not sure what you're doing in there; that could cause far worse problems.
Neither am I saying I know how to fix this, just telling you what *I* would
do *if it were me*, FWIW. I am not an expert, just another AIM user.
