Windows XP and Instant Messenger Problem

I recently upgrade my OS to Windows XP, and everything
appears to be working fine, with the exception of my AOL
Instant Messenger. Whenever I open an IM Buddy Window, I
am unable to type any text within the Message Box.
Additionally, certain keystrokes that I make actually
perform other operations, as if the "ALT" key were
stuck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the AIM program
several times, but the problem persists. I am not having
this problem with any other application on my computer.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem?

This is not going to soothe you much. Wish I had more info. to assist you.
Am familiar with the program and problem you're experiencing. Got frustrated
with it, and did away with it. Perhaps someone in the newsgroup could
recommend alternatives to both of us; albeit, something that actually works
consistently.

That is how I stand with MSN Messenger. No fix for my problem., not
even Messenger newsgroups. I've given up on it a while back. All
they can say, more or less is "well, that's just the way it is, too
bad". Others i've seen having the same problems. I've been computing
almost a year now & 75% - 80% of the time I have had voice problems
with it. Every other aspect of MSN Messenger work fine.

So I am now a major user of Yahoo Messenger, as well as now being in a
Yahoo Messenger based chatroom group. I fire up MSN to transfer
files, because that part of it at least is superior to Yahoo. So all
of us have MSN just for that, but Yahoo is our main IM program. If MS
is looking to hook new customers, they certainly aren't doing it with
their IM program.

I've also had a lot of problems with XPs Instant Messenger. Looks like it is time for another service pack update from our friends at Microsoft. "major user of Yahoo Messenger" humm that's not a bad idea. Maybe it is time to move on. Too bad MS puts out buggy software.

My problem was:

I also want to get rid of Messenger, but your fixes don't work.
I also don't want msn.messenger to log on to the internet and throw up two annoying screens every time I turn on my computer. I've used msconfig to shut off msnmsgr.exe and it works until I check my e-mail then it is back. I do want to use my msn e-mail, but I don't want msn.messenger at all. I just followed a WinMsgr link and got some instructions. The first instruction used the Preferences tab of Tools Options General SignIn. No good. Checked my e-mail and it came right back. I then used a registry Messenger\Client instruction. Also no good. Is there a way to go into the registry and put in a line to remove or disable the msnmsgr.exe in the startup? Well I guess my computer has msn messenger herpes. I can't get rid of it and it always comes back. Please help if you can! I'm very very frustrated here. I also run XP Home Edition.
