AOE II Uncontrollable Scrolling in mini-map

Hi!

When I start a game in AOE II, the map scrolls uncontrollably! The box
which represents the area of the map that you are looking at scrolls
diagonally left and up, then when it hits the upper left and top edge, it
scolls right and up until it is at the top of the map.

I can click the box and put it in another area of the map then it
immediately takes off again in the same pattern.

It's as if I have the left and up key pressed down, which, of course, I do
not.

Otherwise, the game itself is not crashing in any way and seems quite
stable. In other applications (haven't tried other games recently), I have
no problems with uncontrollable movement like this.

I have a USB MS Natural Keyboard Pro and Wireless Optical MS Mouse. Win XP
SP2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Yakhunter,

This issue isn't specific to XP, and is quite commonly reported in
the AOE II newsgroups on this server.

The only successful consistent workaround is to move your mouse
in the direction of the scroll.

You could try disabling your keyboard software using Task Manager.
It might help, but didn't in most cases reported in AOE II newsgroups.

Aggravating!

Just for fun, I plugged in an old PS2 keyboard and rebooted, but same result.

Not sure I get the the "move your mouse in the direction of the scroll", as
that seems to have no effect.

Thanks for your reply and your help. I really like AOE, just haven't played
in a while. Now, I guess I'll have to get a new version. What's the latest?
Should I wait for next version? Think this problem is fixed in newer
releases?

Hi Yakhunter,

If you "moved your mouse in the direction of the scroll", as though
you were racing it to the top of the minimap, it should have worked.

Did you End Task on the Keyboard and Mouse software?

No "official" news has been released as to if and when AOE III will
be developed or made public, but ES says the "wait is almost over":

Yakhunter,

Please forgive the intrusion, but I saw your post and wanted to offer a
possible solution.

Do you have a joystick, gamepad, steering wheel, or other joystick-type
device attached to your system?
If so, have you tried unplugging the device before launching AoE?

We've seen a few instances where a game device causes issues with apps that
"shouldn't" be affected by a joystick.

Hope this helps.
