Almost (but not 100%) every time I close Outlook 2003 and restart it I get
the message "Personal Folders Failed to Close Properly, checking Folders"
and then it takes a few minutes before it will reopen.

My business partner has exactly the same problem. He runs a new DELL 3.2
Gig and I run an old 900MHz clunker. Both Win XP SP2, and both Outlook 2003
with upates installed. Both Office XP.

Any 3rd party applications that sync/use/protect Outlook data? (e.g. Fax,
PDA, .etc) I had to ask because it sounds like something is keeping Outlook
resident in memory even though you can't see a user interface.

Yes. I should have mentioned I closed ActiveSync before trying.
I also deleted file extend.dat
I also used the "file", "exit" rather than the "x" all of which are reputed
to help. Nope.
Thanks anyway.

Do you have SP1 for Office/Outlook 2003 installed and is the PST file on a
local or network drive?
