Hi,

My daughters computer keeps going to a black monitor?

She had trouble with files infected with viruses and we had to re format the
hard drive, she was told to get rid of Kazaa. behind my back she reloaded
kazaa to get a song , took it off so I would not see it, and in the 10 days
of my holidays has now got this problem. I do not know a lot about
computers, does she have a virus? we do have Vet installed and when we run
it, it shows nothing?

Mel

1 - get rid of kazza, if you must steal copywrited material try WinMX
(www.winmx.com)
2 - update your video card drivers from the cards website.
3 - Run these tools weekly
spybot -- http://www.safer-networking.org/
ad-aware -- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
HiJackThis - http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
4 - if she can't be trusted to not install junk programs make here account a
limited users so she can't install junk and mess the computer up.

5 - Run an virus scan with updated and current anti-virus software.

6 - always have a firewall turned on.

7 - check your power settings, make sure monitor isn;t set to turn off, if
you don't want it to.

8 - post back if none of this helps, with more specifics about the exact
problem, what your doing, what do you mean by "going to a black monitor"

Kazaa loads/installs all types of spyware on a sys, as well as possibly
downloading infected files, try Adaware, install updates before running
www.lavasoft.nu its free.
Run an online scan from www.symantec.com
KazaaLite installs less spyware, do not update when using it.

I am against any piracy of "any sort", (I am a writer) which is why she was
told to get rid of kazza in the first place. So she will not be able to have
1 either.

2. don't know how to do this?

3. will try these have spybot and ad-aware will d/l HiJack

Re 4. I don't know how to do this and she promises "now" not to go on to
places like "kazza" again.( yeh right)

5 & 6 have done
7 don't know how to do this?

8. will do above, what I can, and post back if problem still exists.

MANY thanks
Mel

OK no prob.
For #2 - First find the name of your video card. Check your computer manual
or: right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager,
expand display adapter, write down the name. Then goto the website of the
maker of the card or the maker of your computer and goto the download
drivers section. (example: if your card name is ATI Radeon 9200, then goto
ati's website at www.ati.com). Find the correct driver for your card and xp,
download it and click it to install.
For #4 - In xp goto control panel, user accounts, choose her account,
choose: change my account type, set to limited account.
For #7 - right click desktop, properties, screen saver tab, power, set
monitor turn off time to what you want.
