Anyone Had This Problem?

Hi can anyone help me here?
Quite a while ago I was prompted by windows update to update my
Nvidia drivers. After installing the recommended update I was asked
to restart my system, but it got to "Windows is shutting down..." and
then stopped. I had to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
to switch it off. Once restarted I looked at the video settings and the
menu's didn't display correctly. I used roll back to go back to the
original drivers. The system still stopped when I tried to restart as
before, but once rebooted the video settings menu's displayed ok.
I have since found that if I shut down the system instead of using
Restart, Windows switches off the system ok, but Restart always
stops as before. I was bugged by this and tried System Restore and
various other things to cure this problem, but I've had no success.
I wanted to upgrade my video card so I removed the 64mb GeForce4
MX420 and all it's drivers, then fitted a 128mb ATI Hercules 3d
Prophet 9200/9200SE card. I installed the drivers for this card,
(Ati2mtag.sys) from the install disc that came with the card. I then
restarted the system and once again it stopped at "Windows is shutting
down..." I had to press and hold the power button again to switch off.
Everything on my system works ok except for this restart problem,
which is now bugging me big style. Has anyone got any ideas to fix
this problem and put me out of my misery? (he he)

Thanxs

Don't know.
But you are very 'rarely' ever doing yourself a favor if you use Windows
Update to update your Video Drivers.
Use the card mfg or computer makers site to update those next time.
Do a search in the MS KnowledgeBase for a possible solution.
Remember, when changing vid cards, be sure to uninstall the old ones
completely first.

Can I recommend "Driver Cleaner 3" for that ? Uninstall both nvidia and Ati
software, if it's there. Then run DC3, restart, download and install
Catalyst3.7 or newer, and install that (or go for Omega drivers).

The cat-uninstaller from
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html is very
effective for Catalyst driver removal. However, it obviously won't be
any good for NVidia drivers.

I think you may have done yourself no favours here - not only have you
installed an M$ driver update - well known bad news - but NVidia and
Ati drivers are notorious for not mixing well. The wisest solution
may be format C: and a complete OS reinstall. Try less extreme
measures, certainly, but bear this in mind.
