I try to boycott, in particular, French products. They way the tried
to stonewall our efforts, only for us to find out the corruption
involved and the deal making despite UN embargo's agains Iraq turns my
stomach. I'm not here to start a political debate about it all, but
I'm a staunch Bush supporter and French products of any kind are not
allowed in my house. German products I'm a little lighter on because
they didn't go the extreme distance France did, but I won't be buying
a Mercedes, BMW, or VW anytime soon either.

Coming from a French coward, I'm not in the least bit amused...

I'll put my IQ of 146 up against yours anyday, BTW...

I'm no fan of the french either.
But then the US can't brag either.
It'd take many a year for the french to catch up to our government
when it comes to dirty pollitics and I can't think of a bigger bunch
of cowards than what we have in Washington.

You know, I wasn't trying to start a political war here. I avoid French
products, and that's that. Let it be. It's my right, and I'm exercising it.

However, I wasn't going to stand for the guys remarks, so I responded. Now,
let's let the subject die and avoid all political discussion here. This is
about building PC's, not about international politics.

Then don't mention that you staunchly support the biggest villian to
ever steal the white house.
It may be trivial for you but GW is screwing the rest of us to death.
And I do mean that literally.

Not to mention you don't get to put that state_ o_ the_ art
vidcard in either...
I have an Nvidia FX 5950U (Nvidia's latest) running just fine on suse 9.0.
I am an old fart that has been away from Unix/Linux for many years and for
all purposes a novice. Yast2/KDE in suse is very good at auto updates and
just a small command line and voila.......... I use both Windows XP and
Linux and am not by any stretch a Linux or Windows fanatic. I do most all
my on-line stuff like email, ngs, browsing and office apps on Linux and
Windows XP for gaming and things that are not so easy to do on Linux.
Linux is great for keeping the old mind working......:). I used MS from
the MS-DOS days to XP, and have only had this new Suse distro installed
for a bit over a week. It is much more user friendly, especially for long
time Windows users making the switch.

Been using Xandros Deluxe version of Linux (debian version of Linux)
for more than a month. Tried Red Hat and other versions ... a pain
in the neck. Xandros Deluxe is simple to install and update.
Includes crossover to run most windows programs if I like. And using
Linux doesn't have to become a new programming "hobby" to keep it
working. I still have windows 2000 professional installed ... until I
transfer my email archives.

I'm interested in knowing how administration duties are in Xandros. I
wouldn't mind trying the distro out to find out, but they don't release a
free download version to do so. I think I'll hold off on installing Debian
itself, until they can make it easier for novices like me.) I've been
told that Debian's method of package handling is far superior than the rpm
method, but all I've ever used was Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSE, all of
which use rpm. SuSE does include apt4rpm and some other apt based utilities
for the console, but I'm really interested in GUI usage. Also, SuSE's YaST
is second to none to configure just about everything except KDE and Gnome.
I've tried Knoppix, and it combines administration duties in the KDE
Control Center. I'm not sure if I like that method.

Anyway, some feedback would be appreciated.

Really? I'm using SUSE 9.0 right now. I like it all right.

What about a debian based distro like MEPIS? That's debian based and
real easy to install. *Real easy* :)
I've been

method, but all I've ever used was Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSE, all of

In MEPIS like other debian distro's you can simply type at a console:
apt-get update
to update your list of dependencies.

and then:
apt-get install synaptic

for example if you wanted synaptic.

MEPIS comes with synaptic (a graphical frontend for apt-get) already
installed and also kpackage, which is a similar type of thing from the
looks of it.

It'll also do .rpm's too. I wanted XnView but couldnt apt-get it so I
simply downloaded the .rpm for XnView, used the alien command to change
it from an rpm to a .deb file and used kpackage to install that.

Dead easy and not a wizard in sight!
