Hi, I an performing a boot-time Repair operation on Windows XP Pro SP2 and
it is crashing around the 37 minute mark. Is there a way to cancel this
setup procedure and revert to the existing installation, which worked
okay-ish?

When I reboot after the crash, Setup just restarts and crashing the same
places.

I have tried fixboot fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild. Any other possibilities?

I found a solution to this - I entered the Recovery Console and with a bit
of toeing and frying, copied a recent System Restore's registry files back
to the \windows\system32\config folder having first renamed the current
ones. It seems the Setup progress is stored in the registry. Once the
older registry was back in place, Windows booted as normal. Hope this helps
someone else.

Hello,
You have a misture of OLD and new files on the system right now, you were
in the middle of setup so some of the files were copied over and some were
not.
So your system is in a real weird state now. The installed files are not
matched, the registry certainly doesn't match the install situation.
So the potential for problems with this installation is high. This is bad,
you have not rolled back setup, you just stopped in the middle.
You need to complete an repair or upgrade of this situation before you
start seeing any number of issues. Hotfixes or security updates may or may
not be installed, according to the old registry they are installed, but the
repair may have removed the files.
Thanks,

How do you suggest I achieve that, if Repair was failing?
