Any how to get back to using "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" for previews?

C

Carol Haynes

I installed Adobe Photoshop and allowed it to claim all graphic formats
(which is what I wanted) however I find the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"
accessed with Preview via the context menu in Windows Explorer more useful
than PhotoShop for quickly looking at images.

Has anyone any idea how to restore this for just the Preview menu option.

I have looked in Tools>Folder Options>File Types and can set the application
manually under the advanced button for individual file types but I don't
know what the command is to run the Windows File Viewer.

Anyone any idea of the format for the command ? Ploughing through the
registry it seems to be related to using rundll32 with a dll file but the
format I saw for the command doesn't work.

TIA

It should be "Regsvr32 shimgvw"
or
rundll32 shimgvw,DllRegisterServer

Scratches head - I really can't get this to work in any way at all.

Hear is what I have tried ...

Open Folder Options > File Types > JPG > Advanced

I now try to change the path for the "preview" entry so that it opens
Windows Preview rather than Photoshop.

I can't find any string that works ...

I have tried:

Rundll32 shimgvw "%0"
"Rundll32 shimgvw" "%0"
"Rundll32" "shimgvw %0"
Rundll32.exe shimgvw.dll "%0"
"Rundll32.exe shimgvw.dll" "%0"
"Rundll32.exe" "shimgvw.dll %0"
Rundll32.exe shimgvw.dll,DllRegisterServer "%0"
"Rundll32.exe shimgvw.dll,DllRegisterServer " "%0"
"Rundll32.exe" "shimgvw.dll,DllRegisterServer %0"

I have also run "Regsvr32 shimgvw" in a command prompt window and then
retried these options.

None of them work.

Can you tell me what the string should be in the File Type Advanced path
field?

Cheers

Carol

Open Photoshop and look for "Preview" in the preference menus that hook
into the Windows shell. Turn those off. Shouldn't be necessary but wouldn't
hurt to restart at this point. Then use Ramesh's regsvr32 command.

PhotoShop Elements doesn't have that in the preferences but it does have
Edit>File Associations ... ;-)

What I did was to unassociate it from PhotoSHop (which restored the previous
association) and then looked up the string in the File Types window.

For future reference the correct string to place in the "preview" fiels is:

rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1

and now works fine again ;-)

Thanks guys - together we got it sorted ;-)

You're welcome and thanks to Sharon.

BTW: Registering the shimgvw should automatically place the entry you said:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<progid>\shell\open\command]
(Default) "rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"
For all supported image file types.

Yes. Unassociating them from Photoshop and registering shimgvw is the answer.

Interesting running RegSvr32 didn't seem to do that.

The other problem is that I don't want the files 'unassociated' from
PhotoShop - only from the context menu 'preview'. That way when I double
click it loads for editing but I can right-click and get an instant preview
(without having to wait for PS to load).

It is tedious but going through the File Associations manually and pasting
in the relevant command in the preview field has done the trick.

I do wish software vendors would make it easier to specify how files are
associated and not just grab everything for their own application. At least
in PS Elements there is a way to associate/disassociate filetype, in PS7 you
have to uninstall and reinstall if you want to do it and most software
doesn't even give the option!

Cheers
