Any hope for recovering pst file to outlook 2003

Hi - i need serious help

I recently reinstalled windows XP, backing up my outlook files by copying
the data file to CD. I have a feeling that outlook was open when I did this
which is a problem judging by other posts, but I am not sure on that. These
files are my only souce of contacts/calander etc.

On trying to recover the data into a reinstalled outlook 2003 (by copying to
hard drive, making sure it is not read only, and by trying to open file or
import) I get the error that it 'is not a personal folder file'.
I have tried SCANPST.EXE and it says it does not work; 'does not recognise
the file and no info can be recovered'.
I have also tried outlook recovery repair toolbox and advanced outlook
repair.

Is there any hope of recovering the information, does anyone have any
suggestions?

If you google there are some third party OL data file recovery utilities,
whether any have a trial version I cannot answer, someone will probably
reply.
If you choose this route ensure you are working on a copy of the file.
There are also data recovery specialists, should your data be critical.
