Importing Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007...with several .pst issues.

I have a 1.78 GB .pst on my old computer with Outlook 2003 on Windows XP. I
just bought a new computer running Windows Vista Home Premium and installed
Microsoft Office 2007 (with Outlook 2007 with Business Contacts manager).

I installed Office 2007 successfully, and when opening Outlook 2007 for the
first time, I was prompted to set up an email account, which I did and it
worked fine. However, I was now faced with the issue of getting my old
Outlook 2003 1.78 GB .pst file moved over. I copied the .pst file to a thumb
drive, and then copied that to a new temporary folder on my new computer (so
it wouldn't be reading/transferring from the thumb drive).

However, instead of following some of the procedures here I just copied my
..pst files (the Outlook and Archive .pst) and moved them to the same folder
as the newly created .pst. (users - user name - appdata - local - Microsoft-
Outlook).

At this point I believe I was asked to replace or just copy the file. Since
the newly created .pst had just a few emails in it, I chose "replace". Then
when I opened Outlook I got a "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot
open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have
been detected in the file... (users \user name...etc.pst). Quit Outlook and
all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair too
(Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more
information about the Inbox Repair tool, see Help."

Okay...so I do a search for Scanpst.exe on my computer and it's not there.
Also, I do a search for Inbox repair tool and no dice either. So I
double-check in the standard Help section. Still no luck.

So checking on the web, I found out where to download Scanpst.exe
(http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/outlook/repair.html). However, when I
downloaded it, I got the "This application has failed to start because
SCNPST32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this
problem. I have tried re-installing 3 times but no change in luck, so I
followed the http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/outlook/repair.html
instructions ("If you still have problems running it, then search your hard
disk for a file named "CNFNOT32.EXE" then run it: it should unpack and copy
the Scanpst.exe file to its default path ('C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSMAPI\1033')". However, when I found CNFNOT32.EXE and ran it,
it appears as if nothing happened, and when I tried Scanpst.exe again I got
the same error. And now today, I cannot even find CNFNOT32.EXE on my
computer.

Okay, so this all failed, so I figured I would delete my 1.78 GB .pst file
and start fresh by opening Outlook and using another method to get the .pst
in there. However, now it won't open because it's searching for a .pst file
and I am getting a .pst file cannot be found.

So I am thiking, hey, I will just reinstall Microsoft Office 2007 and then
open Outlook 2007 fresh again, and then configure an email account, etc. like
I did the first time. however, even after "removing" Office 2007, and then
re-installing it, I am still getting the ".pst file cannot be found."

So now I have a new version of Outlook that I can't open, and a possibly
corrupt .pst file that I can't correct. I am about ready to call Microsoft
and just eat the charges as I have spent a good 5 hours on this already with
no end in site.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Overwriting a pst can cause both corruption of the pst and or the profile.
Copying a pst, when OL is not totally closed will cause corruption of the
pst.

Start over with your old PC, ensure OL is closed - not a running process -
and that no Desktop search utilities are accessing the pst.
Copy to your thumb drive, from there to a My Documents folder on new PC.
Ensure read only flag is off - it should be when using a thumb drive.
Use the mail applet in the control panel to create a new profile, add this
data file to it, and configure & test the accounts. (It is not necessary to
locate pst files in their default location, allthough you will have to
configure OL archive option to utilise the origonal archive in its new
location)

PS Uninstalling OL does nothing to either your data file or profile

Thanks so much for you help. I am amazed at how helpful everyone here is.

I tried what you said - I think - and opened the mail applet and created a
new profile. Then, I created a new profile, then went to properties, then
data files. At that point it had the default OL path in there. I didn't do
anything with that one but instead just went to the data files tab, then
clicked "add". It then asked me what kind of new OL data file I wanted to
add and I chose Office OL Personal folders file, then choose my .pst which i
saved in a folder on my C drive.

However, I again got the same error ("Errors have been detected....use Inbox
repair tool (scanpst.exe)....etc. And as I mentioned, I couldn't find or
run scanpst.exe either.

Any thoughts?

I have reopened my OL on my old computer several times and am thinking of
just trying to make this one work since I have over 2000 contacts on here and
can't imagine starting up OL without having any of them....even if it means
an old, slow computer.

SCANPST should be in %CommonProgramFiles%\system\MSMAPI\1033 for U.S.
English installations.

I thought the UK English locale is 2057. Maybe there's no difference
between the two in that regard.
