Any guidance on getting rid of Trojan programs

One of my XP pro systems seems to have acquired a trojan horse program of
some sort. At least that is what my McAfee Version * anti-virus program is
telling me.

The trouble is I haven't figured out how to get rid of it. the virus scan
doesn't get rid of the producer. It finds the other files that have been
infected. I bought a down load of the the software, so I don't have a
bootable CD to try to clean from a pure source and even if I did, I am not
sure I could clean my NTFS partitions. Am I wrong about this?

I am thinking about running a system repair, but would that fix the
registry? How does one get rid of the trojan permanently?

If you know the name of the virus, you can download a removal tool from:
http://sarc.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

Try killing all processes that don't look familar, and then clear all your
temp files, and remove any funny looking programs, and delete their folders
from Program Files folder, and might want to browse through the root
C:\Windows directory for anything our the ordinary as well.

Also if you don't already, run Spybot:

I also recomend running Adaware right along with it.

A free download of Spybot should get rid of any real nasties and is
regularly updated

Stop System Restore and re-run the cleaner. Once done, restart System
Restore.

Added info:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

Note2: To avoid the False-Flag for the DSO Exploit (W3), open
Spybot/Advanced Mode/Settings/Ignore Products. On the All Products Tab,
scrol to DSO Exploit and check that item only. Randy (silj)
