any application hangs whenever i click a link or object that calls another app

OK, I'm stumped on this one. It doesn't seem limited to one
application, rather it appears to be a system wide thing. I'm running
XP Pro w/sp2. Examples:

I get a mail in outlook with a word attachment, I click the word
attachment to open word, I get an hourglass, word never opens, I have
to kill the outlook process.

I get a mail in outlook with a MS project attachment, I click the word
attachment to open word, I get an hourglass, MS project never opens, I
have to kill the outlook process.

I get a mail in outlook with a URL, I click the URL to open a browser,
I get an hourglass, browser never opens, I have to kill the outlook
process. This happens whether IE or Firefox is set to be the default
browser.

I get an email in EUDORA (rather than Outlook) with a URL. I click the
URL to open a browser, Eudora hangs, I have to kill the eudora process.

I'm running Eclipse for a CVS client, I try to open a Word doc that's
in the CVS repository, Eclipse hangs, word never opens, have to kill
the eclipse process.

Basically any one app that contains a link that launches another
application causes the app to hang. I've searched the MS KB and found
nothing. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

this is not limited to outlook as i pointed out in the later examples.
the first three are outlook, the next two have nothing to do with
outlook. thanks anyway though.
