Word and Excel hang on insert -> object -> Create from File

MS Word 2007 always hangs when I click on "Insert -> Object -> Create from
File" and then click [Browse]. It shows the spinning "busy" icon and never
comes back. I have to end up killing the app.

I have also had this happen in Excel but not always. In Word, it always
happense and nothing has affected this behavior. I've read the posts about
the file access dialogs and network printers (which I have) but shutting off
the printer and restarting it, leaving the printer off; nothing has altered
this hang problem in Word.

Once, I opened Outlook which appeared to fix Excel (might have been
coincedence) but it had no affect on the problem in Word.

However, I just found that after waiting for a very long time (time to write
this message), Word is now working!

What is causing this behavior??

Windows XP: Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows
desktop or in the Windows Start menu, left-click on Disconnect
Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped drives that are not
currently available.

Windows Vista: Click on Start | Computer | Tools | Disconnect
Network Drive, and disconnected any mapped drives that are not
currently available.

Yep, I already thought of that because the time-lag seemed reminiscent of a
network time-out.

But I have no mapped network drives. :-(

Hi Rod,

Have you tried repairing your Office installation? You can do this via the Control Panel ('Add/Remove Programs' or 'Programs and
Features') or via Word/Excel Options|Resoures|Diagnose.

Hadn't done that; worth a try, I guess. However, when I went to control
panel, it only promoted with a dialog to remove rather than the old,
remove/repair/install dialog. I am running Home/Student so maybe it behaves
differently? Or maybe, under Vista, the dialog is misleading and, after
saying yes to "uninstall" it comes up with the old dialog?

Hi Rod,

The repair option should be there. If not, you can do a repair via the installation media.
