insert an excel file into word as an object

In the past in Word 2002 I have been able to insert an excel file into a word
file as an object but for some reason now when I insert the file I get a
blank box instead of the file. If I go to print preview the data from the
excel file shows up. Any ideas on how to get the data to show up in the
document?

Tools > options > view > uncheck 'picture placeholders'
