antivirus software conflict, startup halted

Well, long story short, I installed Panda Antivirus on a Win XP laptop
already preinstalled with Norton 2004, and when I clicked on the Panda icon
everything froze. (two programs in memory...) Then I tried restarting, but
the startup thing always halt after the "Loading your settings" (or something
like that), leaving a blank blue screen with nothing on it. The problem is
the laptop has no floppy, and I don't want to reformat then restore it.
Is there any easy way of resolving this? And if you burn a CD with the Win
XP startup floppy files on it, will it function the same way?

Start your computer in "safe" mode and uninstall or disable one anti-virus
program or the other and reboot. I did this a few years ago when I was new to
computers.
