I recently installed GriSoft AVI (freeware antivirus software) on my
computer. My intent was to just have it available to perform a manual
scan whenever I chose (i.e., NOT to have it resident and performing
background scans). But I noticed that immediately after a boot, I was
unable to access my dial-up connections for 2 or 3 minutes (there's
another thread in this group that I started concerning this issue).
Well, it turns out that AVI was performing a scan on boot-up, and
locking me out of my programs until it was done. I've removed AVI, and
the problem is gone.
The questions are: Is this a setup problem with AVI (can it be set to
NOT perform background scans)? Is there another freeware AV program
that will do what I want?
OS is Win 2000 Professional.
Thanks.
