transfer files from usb external drive

Recent I got my hard drive (boot sector only) infected and corrupter. Found
out the hard way the virus migrates itself from on hard disk to another as I
used it as a slave to recover uninfected scanned files.

My question is:
If I put the infected IDE disk on an external usb-to-ide converter cable,
don't boot with it plugged in, can I still get infected ? Most of the files
were scanned and OK according to Norton 2005 AV, but the boot sector could
not be scanned.

I don't think you can get infected. Furthermore, if you have
reviewed your virus protection policy since this unfortunate
event, you would now have installed and updated an industrial
strength virus scanner on your PC which will protect you
against any further infections.
