Anti-virus software

M

Mr. Mom

Hi,
I have finally gotten my new system up and running, and I need to buy a good
anti-virus software. I have used McAfee and Norton in the past. McAfee I
did not like because I felt like their customer support was seriously
lacking. Norton I have had pretty good luck with. Is anyone aware of any
other anti-virus software makers that have an outstanding product? Also, I
am running WinXP and use their firewall. Should I go ahead and buy a
separate firewall program?
TIA

The WinXP firewall will not protect your from adware or trojans trying
to 'phone home' or call out from your computer. The free version of
ZoneAlarm will. If you want to buy a firewall, buy ZoneAlarm Pro.
Regarding antivirus, norton's customer support has been shockingly bad
in my experience, and their products have some significant bugs (like
starting ms messenger every couple of minutes when you have norton set
to protect instant messenging). I'm happy with the free version of
grisoft's AVG. There's a more up to date version with slightly better
detection technology that you can pay for. I'd recommend that.

Microsofts Firewall is pretty awful. However, XP Service Pack 2 will
include an uprated firewall. XP SP2 is not on general realse yet but
you can see whats its got at
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/news_story.php?id=54295&searchString=firewall

The free ZoneAlarm is a very good product and I would recommend it.

As fo antivirus software. IMO Norton is the best.

I have never had any issues with it and the LiveUpdate facility means
I dont have to worry about updating the virus protection as its all
done automatically.

NAV 2004 can be installed on only one machine per license. NAV 2003 can be
used on 5 (?) IIRC. Same engine, and you download current signature files
frequently.

AVG is excellent and free to individual use. It scans email, updates
automatically, and no nag screens. If you want to spend money, get
Norton. Zonealarm is a top-notch firewall, and (surprisingly) it is
free too. Microsoft's firewall does not monitor output to the
Internet, a serious product flaw (do you mind if spyware sends out
personal data to the Internet without your knowledge?).

EZ Antivirus has never failed me. I have used most of the popular Antivirus
software but always go back to EZ Antivirus.

EZ AV does indeed work well. But I had to give it up because CA couldn't
keep straight which of my 3 machines was which. The update notifications
and renewal messages were going to the wrong places etc. And you MUST have
written down the long software key and your customer number. The software
key changes when you renew for another year so bookkeeping is complicated.
AND when I finally threw my hands up in the air and removed it from all 3
machines, they refused to refund my money for the software and two update
subscriptions. Finally, they have no tech support and if you need an
answer, get ready to spend a day reading their web site.

I use avant! on my Win XP Pro. It works great, easy, and has an
excellent reputation. It's much like AVG, but will work with any e-mail
program; not just Outlook.

There is only a licence key now. You don't get a customer no. any more to
install. Sorry to here you had problems with renewing part.

Not true. The 60 day period is only if you DO NOT register. If you
register on their website then it's good for 14 months. At the end of
that 14 months all you have to do is to register again.
