Anti-Virus software Shareware which enables manual definition file download

J

John Abraham

I am looking for a Anti-Virus software Shareware or Freeware which enables
manual definition file download (with a Download Manager) and allow update
to their installed Anti-Virus software. Norton is allowing such facility but
their definition file is very large in size. (More than 8mb). I have a slow
dial-up connection.

Your kindest most honest response will be appreciated.

I would recommend trying Avast! antivirus.
I've been using it for over a year and its been great!
It's also FREE!

I would also recommend installing the new Windows Defender
antispyware program. It's also FREE!

My mom is using the free AVG on dial up. It doesn't have a download
manager per se though. Works easily for her.

AVG Free's files are usually small in size. Every once in a while there are
some large files.

There is sort of a download manager, I think all it does is resume a
download.

AVG Free for Windows is a free anti-virus protection tool developed by
Grisoft for home use.

The just-released Kaspersky 6.0 is top notch:

and it is far less bloated than NAV. IMO, it has a very sensible
design which offers many options to knowledgeable users, yet
is very user friendly to newbies with its default configuration.
Version 6 uses scan speedup techniques which result in making
its presence unnoticeable on many PCs.

It does have a manual update option. If you update regularly,
most updates are relatively small in file size. I strongly suggest
using its manual update option instead of some download
manager.

Forgot to mention, I use AVG7 Free and only do manual updates. And I am on
cable.

I also reccomend Avast AntiVirus. It is a great freeware software, and
HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomended.

You should remembar that with the increasing complexity of virus and
malware, associated software (free, or otherwise) has to be complex -
and therefore consist of large files - to afford any reasonable level
of protection.

Most software companies assume that everyone (most people?) have a
high speed connection (I know Microsoft does!!) and that "big" files
are no longer a problem.

And why don't you like Antivir? Configure it to not download updates
automatically and you're all set. AntiVir is far and away the best of the
freeware bunch, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Good to hear all is well. I like AntiVir and use it on my old ME (without
any problems whatsoever) box as well as this one. Be sure to manually
update frequently (right click on icon in system tray and hit start update)
as the updates are frequent. There are times when the servers are swamped
so if the update hangs, don't panic. Try again a bit later.

Good Luck!
