F-Prot. Free on demand DOS scanner and the Windows 98 version "may" work
with Win95. The original Win95 and Win95A update doesn't always work with
Win98 compatible software. The later OEM versions such as Win95B will
usually work OK.

FWIW: F-Prot for DOS works perfectly on W95B.

If you can find an old version of Norton Anti-Virus (NAV), say version
2001 or 2002 (it also came as part of Norton System Works, 2001 and
2002).

Those old versions, once installed, will update themselves via
Symantec's LiveUpdate service and will update both the scan engine and
the virus definition file. Once installed, it will check for updates
either automatically or manually (your choice) for 1 year. At which
point you simply un-install it, delete it's program directory, and
re-install it. NAV 2001 or 2002 is a very "light-weight" AV for win
9x (and also works on NT, 2K and XP) and consumes very little in the
way of system resources.

To clarify what I said, the original version of Win95 and the first update
Win95A do not always work with software and drivers designed for Win98.

I don't think the it's a Win95 problem but more of an issue that some
Win98 software and drivers look for the later versions of Win95.

I'm guessing that maybe it's an issue of USB support that was contained in
some versions of Win95B and Win95C, both of which were only "officially"
available as OEM products. There was also reported to be a Win95D but it
may just have been a rumor.

I still have an old box with Win95B OSR 2.01. I've been able to install a
number of Win98SE features this version and they work great.

Got it. Similar here, i.e., w95B w/ lotsa w98 goodies.

Yes it does work, LFN and all some W98 bugs, but works Win3.1-->Win98+
The Dos Based version is on it's last upgrade with FRISK....their replacement is
XP style:

=================

How to obtain updates to the DOS shareware version over the net:

Updates to F-PROT consist of three distinct files.

fp-xxx.zip This file is updated as necessary, maybe every one or two
months. It contains the DOS version of F-PROT and the
current virus definition files.

fp-def.zip Contains the latest SIGN.DEF and SIGN2.DEF

macrdef2.zip Contains the latest MACRO.DEF

The .DEF update files are updated more frequently than the
program itself. At the moment, they are only available
directly from us (ftp.f-prot.com), and any site that
mirrors our FTP site, but that may change soon.

If you have FTP access, you can always get the current version of F-PROT by
anonymous FTP from a number of sites. Our primary method of distribution
is through Simtel and Garbo, and all "mirrors" of those sites should always
carry an up-to-date version of F-PROT.

The primary locations are

ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/virus/fp-xxx.zip
ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/virus/fp-xxx.zip

http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/virus/fp-xxx.zip

xxx stands for the version number, for example 308 in version 3.08

The Simtel archive is mirrored on numerous sites, and in general you
should use the one that is closest to you geographically.
