anti spyware resource hog

GJ

Hi all,

My laptop is running between 10 and 14% of CPU utilization
after installing the anti spyware beta. When I kill the
beta, it drops to between 3 and 6%. When I kill
TeaTimer.exe (one of spybot's apps), my CPU utilization
will sit between 2 and 3 percent.

I can't afford to have my laptop running at 10% CPU
utilization. My machine gets too hot and my power adapter
gets too hot; it decreases my battery run time, and it
decresaes the lifetime of my hardware (because of the
temperature increase).

For reference info: I'm using a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with
512Mb of RAM.

GJ,

What does the CPU run at when you disable TeaTimer and leave
MSAS running ?

MSAS is an active scan which means that there are constant
processes running that are checking the
reg/startup/services/IE.

Open MSAS and go to Real Time Protection and disable the
RTP Agents listed there and see if that frees up some CPU.

Hi, GJ
TeaTimer normally works at near-zero consuming of
resources.
If there are more than 1% of TeaTimer CPU usage
that indicates (in most cases) presence of badly written
software active on your machine, not necessary malware.
You can try temporary stop different programs,
services etc. to track down ill-behaved process(es).
TeaTimer CPU percentage can be used as indicator.
On other hand - it is possible that you have somehow
damaged Spybot S&D installation. In this case I can
recommend COMPLETELY uninstall SS&D, because re-install
S&D on-top leaves previous TeaTimer files unchanged.
Go to:

showtopic=25574
download SS&D ver1.4 beta 2 and install it.
This version has a new, better TeaTimer.
Yes, it's also beta :) but without multiple bugs.
Good luck!
I'm using Athlon Barton 2500+ @2.0GHz 36 deg Centigrade
under medium load using low speed simple air cooler.
Regards, Kaspars
P.S. I had to service one machine without any viruses,
malware etc. and was forced to proceed a clean install
because TT percentage was 20...25%. All common attempts
to track down exact reason were unsuccessful.

This issue has been reported by others, and is of concern. I'm sure that it
is being addressed, but reports are helpful--thanks for reporting it.
