Another installation in process

I am trying to install defender but get the following message "another
installation in progress. You must complete that installation before
continuing this one". Can anyone help please.

If this is the message you are getting, the KB states that restarting the
machine should clear it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236456

If that has been done and does not clear the error, let me know if there's
an error number that is different from the one in the above KB article.

Bill,
Thanks or your response. Unfortunantly rebooting, powering off, kicking or
what ever I do, the error is still there when I try to reinstall again.

After looking at the KB article this sounds exactly like the message I am
getting. But restarting does not clear it.

I am not sure what happened. I left the install active and spent 4-5 hours
developing websites and when I came back to it and hit retry...... IT WORKED.
Thanks for your help, sorry I can't tell you how it fixed itself.

If you want to do some forensics, you could look at the WindowsUpdate
installation history for the relevant date.

Then you could find the log files--in %windir%\system32> and do at a
command prompt:

dir *.log /od

and hit enter.

Then look at the timestamps on the log files--see if something was in the
process of installing over the relevant time period.

Probably not of much interest--glad it worked in the end.
