Up to a four or so days ago my laptop was functioning just fine, but
now, using Internet Explorer 6.1 I cannot sign into any Hotmail
account, or sign in via MSN Explorer, the MSN Messenger program fails
to sign in AND I even could not sign into Google groups to send this
message. I am currently using a different web browser which for some
reason can sign into Hotmail and Google groups.

Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions? It really is major
fault as I use Hotmail and Messenger a great deal.

Thank you,

Chris

OK, there's a real good chance you've picked up a parasite - especially
since an alternate browser circumvents the problems. Follow out the seven
steps (in the order given) here: http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Please report back on results, or write back with any questions.

Hey Jim,

Nothing has changed unfortunately. I installed a program called
Spybot, and it did indeed find a number of spyware programs which it
has subsequently deleted but I cannot sign into Hotmail using Internet
Explorer. Heck, I can't even click on this weblink:

http://posting.google.com/post?cmd=...ft.public.windowsxp.general&btnG=Search&meta=

from this web page

http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=e...ft.public.windowsxp.general&btnG=Search&meta=

without getting "The page cannot be displayed".

It's quite alarming. I've installed security patches and IE's newest
update, and goodness knows how many different virus protection
programs (Adaware, Norton, HijackThis, Spyferret, Trojanhunter,
CWShredder and now Spybot). They all found viruses, which I am sure
are now deleted, and subsequently I have uninstalled all these
programs except for Spybot (which seems the most effective) BUT this
damn problem still remains.

Do you have any idea what may be happening?

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

Since you said you had *so much* infection, I'm still of the mind that there
is something not caught. I see that you have done most of the seps I
recommended on http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm - but not all of them - and
possibly not in the same sequence. Sometimes the sequence matters, because
some of the parasites can keep some of the tools from working correctly, and
that's been taken into consideration in the protocol.

Be sure you have the newest version of each tool, and have updated its
definition file right before using it. My best advice is to go back and
retrace the steps, following the exact steps in the link above, including
the final step of running a HijackThis log. Since I've seen people object to
post HJT logs here (I'm not sure why, go ahead as far as I'm concerned) you
may want to use the option given on that page of posting the log to my HJT
log forum - your choice.

I'm just as sure as I can be that everything hasn't been found, and I'm
confident that this approach will find it.
