How do you get rid of those irritating pop-up information dialogues telling
me to "take the windows xp tour" or that "my ISP is now connected" and that
windows update is available. I KNOW!! I just want this crap off permanantly
without having to click it off.

Each of these is a separate issue and need to be delt with individually.

take the windows tour - respond and then check "don't show this message
again."

for notifications about your network - right click network icon and select
Open Network Connections. In Network Connections right click on connection
and select properties. Under the General tab at the bottom you'll see
"notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity," uncheck
this.

To disable windows update notification - open Control Panel and go to
Automatic Updates and open. Uncheck "notify me but don't download or
install them."

For the 2nd part: "my ISP is now connected":

The XP Tour, should only happen three times. If not in your case, run the
edit on line 303 (right hand side):

For the rest:

Disable Balloon Tips or Disable All (Row 11)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Disable All includes: Balloon Tips, Folder Contents Info Tips, Explorer
Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification Area.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I have the network Icon (but no network) how do I get rid of the actual icon
in systray? Or is this recognising that I have a network card in my system
(but not currently connected)?

He answered you.

When you hover over the icon(s) do they read: Local Area Connection or
perhaps Wireless Network Connection? Having a network has nothing to do
with this.
