annoying habit of explorer or 'my computer'

i've been running XP Pro for quite awhile now. recently my computer has
developed the habit of locking if you click 'windows explorer' or 'my
computer' in order to see a folder/file on one of the drives.

the whole machine doesnt lock, just the window running the explorer. after
a bit the top bar will say 'not responding' sometimes, others not.

other activities, programs going on at the same time continue to work right
along.

if i kill the explorer then the desktop the explorer window will go away,
the desktop clears, then reloads. some apps get killed by that, others not.

once it has done this, then it will continue the same behavior until i
reboot. then it works fine until the next time it decides to misbehave.

any ideas on how to fix this?

thanks.

well, i think/seem to have figured the problem while typing the message.

i was posting while the problem was occurring and by the time i got done,
the 'freeze' had thawed.

thinking of what had been going on. i did some testing & it appears the
'app' running that causes the problem to occur is a folder copy from my home
to my office.

when i look at the task manager during this it doesnt appear as if nots of
memory or system use is going on, just plodding along copying, but it sure
seems to affect how explorer runs.
