Vista doesn't remember that you've typed it once in the RUN window.

And when you restart after changes (no prompt to do this), Vista
(Defender?) blocks the window you have to click to not see the YOU HAVE MADE
CHANGES message again.

What's the big deal? In XP it popped up the Msconfig splash screen and you
had to check the box to not alert you. In Vista when Defender shows the
message in the notification area, you right click, tell it to display the
program and check the box on msconfig to not alert you. Yes it is a couple
more clicks but it happens only on login after making changes in msconfig.

You can still add the 'old style' run box to the start menu, via

Right-click start > Properties > Customize > Check 'Run command'

Hmm... my Run windows does remember what I've typed. I just have to use the
pull-down arrow. Granted, it doesn't use autocomplete as you type though.

About your second point... making changes... sorry, I don't really
understand what you mean here. Could you give an example?

Of course it's not a big deal. It's a little deal.

That's what I got already. I had done it through CONTROL PANEL>TASkBAR AND
START MENU

That IS strange. The pulldown arrow shows blank space, then when I type "M"
web addresses pop up!

Second point: You remember where you have to restart to make the changes on
START?

Then after Restart a window pops up saying you have made changes, check the
box so's you don't have to see this again?

I don't even get the first prompt to Restart.

When I do, Vista blocks that window

I don't know what you mean now. In this installation msconfig is remembered
in the run box. If it was the last item run then it appears there, if not
typing ms shows the list with msconfig at the top.

When making a change with msconfig, it always prompts for a restart on this
system. So it's not a problem inherent with Vista, those are issues with
your system.

Perhaps. You heard of such a thing before?

And how about Vista (Defender?) blocking the screen on restart?

Oh yes, I see what you mean there. Same thing here, if msconfig was not
already in the run box when it's opened, typing the m results in a pop up
lists pointing to an http location, but then adding an s will cause msconfig
to show up at the top of the list. That could be a little buglet.

On you second question about Defender "blocking the screen on restart", are
we talking about the same thing?

When changes are made in msconfig after a restart, an icon from defender
shows up in the notification area saying some programs have been stopped
from starting. If you right click and ask it to show the programs or allow
to run (I don't remember the wording) then up pops the msconfig splash
screen telling you that changes were made and it's in selective startup
mode. From there check the box to not have it alert again, and it goes away
(until the next time changes are made).

Is that what you mean?

If so then that's what I see and it's normal; msconfig is a program that
requires admin privileges to run and so Defender stops it and gives that
alert. There could be a way around that but if so I don't know what that
is.

Right, that's the one.

Just another of the little changes from XP, I guess.

Annoyances, I call 'em :)

Here's another. I make web pages. Before they're even online I get a warning
about opening them, IE7's Scripts and ActiveX thingie

I don't see the Defender issue as an annoyance, it's doing what it should
do, to let me know a program needing admin privileges is trying to run at
startup. It could be that the next time I boot the system I might have
forgotten changes had been made in msconfig. Actually if it's been any
amount of time, I always forget, so the warning is doing it's job.

I don't do web pages so this I would be unfamiliar with.

Well, it didn't in XP.

You like it, that's fine. I think it is stupid.

You mean it didn't in XP? Really? No kidding? Lol...it's a different
security model. Nothing in XP warned when a program was doing things that
required admin privileges unless it was in a limited user account in which
case some things wouldn't work.

I didn't say I liked it or didn't like it. I said for me it's not an
annoyance. If you see it as stupid, so be it, then maybe turn off Defender,
or hide the notification icon, or use some other anti-malware app.

Speaking of annoyances, having to scroll to the end to read your drivel is
too much!

Enjoy your security.

Lol, I did that just for you Bill, knowing how much you love it. Finally
you interjected some humor in your uptight demeanor. Good for you.

Hadn't noticed that but it's probably just as well. It
always interesting to see what's in that particular history,
particularly on servers.

Hmm.. okay, so I rebooted, and guess what I found. The Run window only
"remembers" commands during that session. After a reboot my pulldown arrow
is blank, once again. ! But if I put in a few commands, it does remember
them. Untill, presumably, my next reboot. Also, like you, when I type M,
now, I get weblinks... yep, strange.

I'm pretty lost on the second point. I'll leave that to someone else. Maybe
I haven't had enough coffee yet.
