Application blocked at startup!

Hi,

I set my logitech Setpint utility (for keyboard & mice) to "Run as
Administrator" for all users in startup folder, but it is still blocked by
windows defender after reboot, and I have to click and allow it again. How
can I prevent Windows Defender to block this every time I restart my PC?

System: Vista Business SP1

Setpoint Properties (on right-mouse click menu)/Security tab... elevate
permissions for Everyone.

Phillips,

Thanks for the reply, I assigned Full control to "Everyone" to setpoint.exe
file and the shortcut in startup folder, but Windows Defender still prevents
it from starting-up as administrator.

You have to tell Windows Defender that it's a program that needs to
start by going to Windows Defender's Software Explorer and set the
program's short-cut in WD as a Start-up All users application, you
browse to the short-cut and you *Allow*. If the program needs no
Administrator rights to start, then you don't set Run As Administrator
for the short-cut that makes it prompt for Administrator credentials.

Of course, you have to set Windows Defender's short-cut to Run As
Administrator by right-clicking the menu line short-cut that starts WD
and going to Properties/Advanced button, so that you have the privileges
to make the change.

I have run into that several times, it irritates me every time I do it.
There is absolutely no reason for that type of incompetence when designing
an OS.
It's also one of the reasons Vista won't be making an appearance on my LAN
unless it is tiotally reworked to be functional. Maybe with SP 7...

Properly written applications do not require elevation of privilege to run
when following OS design specifications. Many however, still don't, but
that's not the OS's fault, the specifications have been out for many years.
To allow *anything* to run with elevation automatically from a startup
folder is opening a door to infection by malware. As Shawn has indicated,
the proper method of doing this is by creating a task.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the suggestion.

When I googled this problem, I actually came across that URL you sent me,
but I overlooked it. I created a Task to launch Setpoint.exe "on logon",
via Trigger/Action, however it was failing to start. After spending
sometime on this, I realised that even though task was running using my
local account(administrator) it was failing to start, which I still don't
undrestand why. I changed it to "Administrators" in General>Security
options and it fixed it!

Thanks Again

But if you must manually give the program elevation the first time (or
manually set the shortcut in startup with the proper permissions) it should
run without further interference.
I consider any other behavior to be a defect.

Hi,

I gave Setpoint.exe shortcut (in All User's Startup folder ) and the actual
Setpoint.exe file (in program files folder), "Full Control" to "Everyone".
Then I checked "Show for all Users">"Run as administrator" for both files.
However Windows Defender only allowed it to start as normal and not "As
Administrator"!

Creating task fixed this problem for me.
