AMD Processor Core Name Question

Jeff

I'm looking to build a new server around the AMD 2218 processor. In looking
on the newegg site, there are two of these listed. Perhaps this is a stupid
question, but I don't understand what the (WOF) refers to in the
descriptions below. What is even more confusing is that both of these
listings are at the same price of $609.99 even though one is a retail
version with fan and the other is OEM. All specs for the two are the same
(other than the above), so I'm not sure about the difference, nor why the
OEM version is the same price.

Could someone explain. Thanks

Jeff

WOF = Without Fan. Third-party heatsink/fan required. I have no idea why
they are the same price. I'd be curious if they have the same warranty.
Good luck finding a decent HSF for socket F. :) -Dave

Umm, the abbreviation makes sense, but on a processor, I thought that OEM
typically implies no fan (and no box).

Thanks

These are the only Socket F boards on the Newegg site:

Exactly, I was looking at the Tyan S3992 Motherboard. Up to 16 ram sticks -
8 for each processor. The idea is that the server will be lightly loaded for
the first 6 to 8 months, but will then start working harder. I want
something that I can add memory and an additional processor to when
necessary, and potentially put in one of the newer quad-cores if needed in a
few years (when the price drops).

I'll buy that the WOF is considered "retail," but the other poster's
explanation that "WOF" meant with out fan seems to make sense. ...Perhaps
retail warranty and box, but still no fan?

Yup, retail box, no fan. It seems that the Socket F sockets are proprietary
in design, so AMD couldn't toss in a standard cooler for that processor. At
least from what I've read, each Socket F mainboard seems to mount the CPU
cooler differently than every other Socket F. How annoying. -Dave

apparently the pins are on the motherboard and not the processor. ...and
there is some type of frame mounted on the motherboard to hold down the heat
sink and fan. A few reviews claim this to be a benefit, although they point
out that the socket F is more about future upgradeability than about
definitive improvements that are seen with the current crop of processors.
....but as you mention, the fans that fit on a tyan MB won't necessarily fit
on another MB.

Jeff, You've got your answer on 'WOF' but here's some interesting
info. One is a comparison of server processors (brands):
