always loads at startup, dont want it to

hello,

What gives with this product? I tell it not to load with
windows and it does. I want to use msas as an on demand
scanner only, not as a real time monitor. I prefer to use
webroot spysweeper as my real time scanner, but I cant
get msas to stop loading and coming active at windows
startup.

Please help.

thanks

Kev

Unfortunately, this program is in beta and presently is designed
primarily to function as an active preventive application. The next
beta may allow you to set it up to remain passive but not right now.

Right click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon in the (Notification Area) system
tray and select "Security Agent" Status > "Disable Real-time Protection" or
you can just click "Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware" from the same right
click options.

Does this setting remain when you shutdown and reboot? I have not seen
it work that way.

No. the correct answer to how to disable real-time protection is to use the
workaround in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892375 End users may be prompted to allow or
block administrative actions that originate from a central management tool
after they install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on a computer that is managed
by Systems Management Server 2003

Right,

You can do that after it loads. I want to keep it from
loading. Unchecking the load with windows option has NO
EFFECT. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves
unleashing this product with so many bugs. I understand
it is a beta, but cmon. This is the most basic of
options. All I want to do is keep this from loading at
startup without having to delete something from msconfig
or the registry. Shutting it down after it starts doesnt
help me.
No offense Andre, but does anyone have a real solution?

Thanks

Have you looked in msconfig? Stop gcasServ entry on Startup tab.
You'll still have the shellextension dll loaded, but it seems
pretty innocuous. When you start MSAS by the MSAS shortcuts, it
should load all executables it needs.

MSAS' strength is in its real time agents. I'd choose it over
Webroot's.

Have you read this thread? The answer, from Microsoft, is cited.

I don't disagree that this is absolutely not the way the product should
work--but there is a method given in the KB for disabling real-time
protection, and it is posted to this thread, and before your post.

Yes, I had read this thread. I thought since he said "I want to keep it
from loading" that he wanted to keep it from loading, not simply disable
Agents. Although it was already mentioned he could use msconfig, it
didn't look as if he had.

My mistake. You knew what you were doing and I didn't.
I apologize for my confusion and will be quiet now.
Darn the permanence of posts.

I wasn't picking on you--my message is supposed to be threaded as a reply to
KEVM--so don't be embarrassed on my part--I've made enough bloopers here to
share with everyone!
