alternatives to "guide plus+"?

hello, i've got an ati aiw 9000 with win xp home, and am running the bundled
video card software. i'm not really that happy with the guide plus+
software. it's great to click on the listings and schedule a recording, but
i'd like to extend it a few minutes to make sure i don't miss the beginning
or end of a program.

so, are there other options, other software that will drive this card?

You *can* go into the scheduling tab and alter the times to suit your
needs. That's what I do when I use Guide Plus+ for recording.

i don't see it ... i'm on v1.0.0.38 (and it tells me there isn't an update
available). if i double-click on something scheduled to be recorded a
read-only box pops up. what am i missing? (probably something obvious)

(btw, i think part of my problem was something strange with the
time-b.nist.gov timeserver. it put me a few minutes fast (and made me miss
the tails of all shows), and an "Update Now" from the Windows Date and Time
Properties didn't put me back to (what i think) is the right time. i wonder
if it was timing out (not getting a time-of-day) and not telling me. i
switched to time.windows.com)

He means the schedule tab of the TV properties.

After scheduling in Guide+, go back to TV. Click Properties (the checkbox
on the lower left in the default skin). That has the Schedule tab. You'll
find an entry there for the program you just set up for recording. You can
choose it, choose Modify and change all the settings.

Sorry about that; I should been a little clearer in my reply.

that's ok, i see it now.

i'm wondering where my real problem is though, whether my dell isn't holding
a good time-of-day, or if the channels are sloppy in their starting and
ending times.

are other people getting good results with just click-and-record?

btw, if anyone is listening from guide plus+, i think a good feature would
be a "bracketing" option for the click-and-record. that is, have some
user-defined time "n" and (if there are no conflicts), extend the recording
at both beginning and end by "n" seconds. then i'd just set by bracketing
at 120 seconds and not worry.

your cmos battery maybe getting old.....but in general newer PC clocks are flaky, I remember a 8088 that kept perfect time...its
little things like that, that lets me see the direction that quality control has taken.

If you are using WinXP, you can set it to periodically check and reset
your clock automatically, or reset it manually on demand. Just double
click the time in the lower right corner for instructions.

I generally have had good results scheduling with GuidePlus+, then
altering the recording to start 1 minute earlier, and run two minutes
longer, so if I'm recording a 1-hour show starting at 9 PM, I have it
start at 8:59 PM, and set it to run for 1 hr and 2 minutes.

If your PC clock is chronically innacurate, go here
http://www.softshape.com/download/ and look for cmdtime32.exe. It is a
freeware internet time synchronization utility. I created a shortcut to
it and dropped it on my desktop. I just click it once a day and all is
well. You could probably just schedule it to run via your scheduled
tasks applet if you wanted to. In fact, that's a good idea. Gotta go.

i used that last night at 6pm, and now i'm 3 1/2 minutes off. that's pretty
bad for less than one day. if there was a way to sync more fequently that
might be a work-around, or i might have to start going throuh and editing
all my schedules +2 minutes.

(in asnwer to someone's battery question, the computer is only 6months old.)

Do you have problems with it putting the show title for filename for
8:59 PM instead of 9:00 PM?

For example I reocrd 8:55 PM to 10:05 PM.

ATI Scheduler will record and write .cc and .vcr files based on 8:55
PM title (Foo) instead of 9:00 PM show titled Bar. So I see: foo.cc and
foo.vcr instead of bar.cc and bar.vcr.

Get Xteq X-Setup for Windows XP. It's a freeware tweaking program that
features hundreds of tweaks, one of which allows you to specify the time
synchronization update interval. Default is something like every 10,000
minutes; I've set mine to update every fifteen minutes. I'm sure it
would be simpler to just make a registry entry to reflect the change,
but I don't know what that key would be.

i got it ... huge number of options. at first i tried to go the "wizard"
route and couldn't find it. but in traditiona/advanced user mode i did.
for those who want to try it:

All X-Setup Plug-ins/Network/Network Time Protocol/NTP Update Interval

i think i'll set it for three hours. that should be good enough without
time-server abuse. thanks!

Much better choice than every 15 minutes. That's ridiculous and only
serves to bog down the time servers. If that's off his own NTP server
then fine but I doubt it.

You are absolutely right. Thoughtless of me. I've made the adjustment.
