Alt Key appears to be in locked mode

I have a new laptop - HP Pavilion with Windows XP. I have a wireless Logitech
mouse attached. Several times now I have done something or something has
happened that switches ever letter I type to mean Alt Letter. If I type and F
the file menu appears. H gets the Help menu. I can only get out by rebooting.

Is the alt key stuck down?

Does the problem show itself when the mouse is not connected?
Does your mouse have the four programmable buttons? Is it possible that one
of them is providing the function of the alt key? Check with your mouse's
documentation to see what functions the buttons can be programmed for.

Older versions of windows did this if they went into a power saving mode.
