Allowing Non Admin to change IP Address...

Anyone have any idea's on this one? I've done several searches, but nothing
seems to fit my need.

I have multiple laptop users who go out in the field using Win2k and XP
based units. They all need to connect to hardware in the field using static
IP addresses. Basically the IP enabled units that they are connecting to
all have IP's hardwired by the manufacturers and the employee's need to be
able to change IP's in order to connect to each unit. Can I allow a non
admin user to do this? Is the only solution, to create a local admin
account on the PC and have the user logon as that account or do a "Run As"
in order to change their IP?

We have Vlan's enabled on our corporate network with DHCP dispensing IP
addresses to the units when they connect. These Laptops have to plug into
various segments of the LAN based on where ever they have the opportunity to
plug in to upload the data, and access their e-mail. Therefore giving them
Static IP on our corporate network would be very problematic.

Corporate policy is to lock down the local PC and we would really prefer not
to have to make exceptions to this rule.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

hi, what you can do is create profiles for each location. one that uses dhcp
and another for outside uses.

2cents.

Thank you for the reply,

I appreciate any advice offered, but I don't think that this would be a good
fit.

I believe you are refering to a hardware profile? Similar to docked /
undocked options...?

I may be wearing a dunce hat on this one, so feel free to enlighten the
unenlightened...

The issue would be that I have multiple sites with multiple IP ranges in use
and all of these users need to be able to access each one....

I found a reference to making the users part of the local "Network
Configuration Operators" group on the XP boxes and I will research this
further as a possible solution. I am mor ethan willing to upgrade the OS on
all of the units if it will resolve the problem.

Do you have any experience with this option...?
