All windows 98 Machines stopped seeing AD

We've come in on a Monday morning after making no changes
to our network and none of the 98 machines can connect to
active directory. We get a message that the password has
been changed or no AD server is available. The XP and
2000 Clients are connecting just fine. Has anyone
encountered this?

It looks to be a bigger problem...

Now we're getting a message that: Naming information
cannot be located because: The logon attempt failed etc.

According to the Knowledge base the security database is
corrupt in Active Directory. We're running the fix it
suggested. Any idea what causes this?
