Hi all!!

I have a simple question. Let's supose that we have an Active Directory in
our network, and we have a W98 client too (an old Windows 98, no SE Edition,
without hotfixes....this point is important for this question).

Is necesary to install the active directory client (DSClient) in the W98
machine just for authentication pourpouses?

Thank in advance.

You don't mention the version of Windows that AD is running on -that could
be important.

Basically you can authenticate with Win9x without the DS client -the DS
client doesn't provide this functionality; that's already in the base OS.
However the tightened default settings in Win2003 may not allow
communication with the server as by default SMB signing is required.

It is recommended to use the DS client as this is site aware. However, you
can just reduce the SMB signing security options in the default GPO and be
OK.

I can't remember which legacy systems require what I'm afraid (don't know if
it's just 95 or all 9x or whatever) so here's a link that may help:

I believe one of the key issues is that without the DS Client Win98 will
insist on authenticating the user account with the PDC emulator instead of
the local DC.

In a single subnet scenario this isn't an issue, but we run 60 sites all
with local DC's and the PDC emulator is only in the corporate site.

There is a DS Client for Win98 sans SE.
