My PowerPoint files are appearing in my Windows folders as a file
format I don't recognize, and I cannot click on the icon to open the
file. If I try I get a message that the system does not recognize the
file format. But I can open up the PP application and open the PP file
from inside the application.

I had the same problem with all my Word files and someone told me to
re-register Word, which worked. Can I do the same thing with PP? What
is the command?

Thanks.

Try this first:

RIGHT click one of the icons that should be ppt.
choose properties and make sure that "open with" is powerpoint.
