All Ports absent from Printer setup wizard

David W.

After an attempt to get a game port working without
success, I found my printer had ceased to function. I put
everything back the way it was without luck, so I deleteed
the printer. Now, I get all blanks for my local printer
choices in the add a printer setup wizard. LPT1 shows up
as OK and working everywhere else. Why doesn't the wizard
see it. Command line to print to LPT1 just hangs. IRQ 7
does not show up in the system info. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks for the reply Alan, I've waited weeks. No one seems
to want to touch this.
I've done what you suggested. The settings in the BIOS
show 378/IRQ7 SPP ( the default ) I made a fake change so
it asked for a reboot. Said it found new hardware, but
the wizard still comes up blank. Can I do what the wizard
is attempting to do, but from TCL?

Verify that the BIOS setting for the parallel port is still enabled. Enter
the BIOS setting before Windows starts. All computers are different.

I am still uncertain exactly what you are seeing.

Open Printers folder / File / Server Properties / Ports

Is there a listing for LPT1 to LPT3 as well as COM1 to COM4 and FILE?

If not then the Port list that the spooler reads probably has been removed
from the registry.

You will need to edit the registry to get this information back.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Ports

Add reg_sz value LPT1:

then stop and start the Print Spooler service in Admin Tools / Services

There was nothing showing on;
Open Printers folder / File / Server Properties / Ports
so I viewed the registry where I saw all the values.
So I deleted and re-added LPT1: as you suggested. Stopping
and restarting did NOT solve this. What's next? Can I
send you a screen capture or something?

the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Ports list is read by
localspl.dll

Local Port should point to this binary

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Local Port\Driver
reg_sz = localspl.dll

verify this binary is specified.

I am hoping some software installation nuked the key or changed the value
(though they should not).

If this is all in place you can try a system repair. Anyone who has more
info on system repairs can step in here since I have never done this.
