All messages mark unread after send/receive

I have a client who has Vista and Outlook 2007. Every time send/receive
happens (5 minute intervals automatically or when s/r button pushed), all
mail in his inbox changes to unread. I'm baffled by it. Anyone else ever
see this or have any idea why it's happening?
