Was checking jpg file to print when I found that the Jpg extensions on it and
ALL my jpg pictures have been changed to "Quick Time Picture" type. Thing is,
I don't have Quicktime on this machine. For file types, I now have three;
JPE, JPEG, JPG the last of which is now Quick time Picture type. The first two
are JPEG Image types. Any ideas? would really like to get these back as jpg
files again.

Hi,

Try this: Click start/run, type "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" (without the quotes)
and click ok. You should get a 'successful' message. Then see if the
association has reverted.

Well, the successful message came up but when I went to see the properties of
one of my jpgs, it was still "Quick Time Picture" and opens with application
unknown. I thought it was going to work when I saw the Successful message
but I guess not. Thanks for the responses though.

Right-click one of those .jpg files. Click OPEN WITH|CHOOSE PROGRAM.
Checkmark the "always open with..." box (at the bottom of the list).

In the list, find the program that you want to use to open those files and
double-click it. If the program is not in the list click the BROWSE
button to locate to it.

Paint.exe will work, but a far better choice is the free Irfanview viewer.
It can be associated with most any file type of your choosing.

They *are* jpg files.

The file type is determined by the extension, which in this case
is jpg. The text, such as ""Quick Time Picture" is determined by
what program is associated with that extension. Changing that
text doesn't change the file type.

You must have had Quick Time installed at some point and it
changed the association and the text. You need to determine what
program you have installed with which you want to view jpg files.
Once you've done that, right click on any jpg file, choose Open
with, browse to that program, and check the box "Always use this
program..." The Quick Time description will go away and you'll
then be able to view the files with your selected viewer.

Understood, but my other machine runs[and recognizes] all three types
JPE,JPG,JPEG, as JPEG Images, where this one now runs them as JPEG Images and
Quick Time Picture for the JPG. Something has been changed where if I put in
a cd-rom with JPGs they are immediately changed to Quick Time Picture type
files. The oddity is that there is no Quick time on this machine and I can't
figure out how this change was made. I'd like to get this machine back to the
way it was but it's not co-operating. System restore didn't do it either.
Thanks for the input. bCrsity

Thanks to all who responded, most appreciated .Here's how I solved my little
annoyance. I went into "Control Panel" ,Folder Options, File Types and
deleted the JPG type that was associated with the Quick Time Pictures. Added
"new" JPG and chose the JPEG Image as the file type association. All is well
again... Thanks Again for all the information, it pointed me in the right
direction. bCristy...

I'd guess that stupid CD-ROM contained some kind of autorun viewer setup,
which screwed up your file association. Another reason not to work under
admin privileges.

Go to Control Panel - Folder Options, File Types. Look down for JPG,
highlight and click Advanced. There you can select the application you
do want to use from among the Actions, and click Set Default. If you
can't see it, best to remove the whole association at the outer layer,
then use the appropriate method in the desired program to set up the
association. For the standard viewer run
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Then check in Control Panel to see if something has installed the Quick
Times applet there; if so load it and uncheck the association boxes
there for Windows files and Internet files
